Shirakawa-go winter: what to expect

Shirakawa-go in winter is the version of the village most people picture: steep thatched roofs under thick snow, quiet lanes and cold, clear air. Ogimachi lies in Gifu Prefecture, and the snow arrives early and stays late. The walk through the village has no general entry fee, but once the snow is down interior visits close earlier and the roads need more care.

The figures below are long-term averages from the weather station at Shirakawa, not a forecast. A particular depth on a particular day cannot be promised.

Snow depth by month

Average of the maximum snow cover in each month, Shirakawa station, 1991 to 2020.

MonthAverage peak snow depth
November5 cm
December84 cm
January148 cm
February173 cm
March125 cm
April32 cm

These are averages of monthly peaks, so the snow will often be lower than these peaks. A mild week can leave far less on the ground, a cold snap can leave more. For month-by-month temperatures and rainfall, see our page on Shirakawago weather and the best time to visit.

Shirakawa-go in December

December is the month when winter arrives. In recent years the first snow has come around the beginning of December, and the snow cover builds up from late December to late February. The December average peak of 84 cm shows how quickly it changes: early in the month the village may still look bare, later it can already look like the postcards.

The special evening illumination is not a December event. The next dates are in January 2027 and are covered below and on our Shirakawa-go light-up page.

Driving and getting around in winter

The municipality requires winter tyres, so do not assume a snow-free road network. Check the tyres on a rental car before you set off, and in heavy snow the museum advises that snow chains may be needed. Parking at the municipal car parks costs 2,000 JPY for a car since 1 October 2025.

Many winter visitors take the bus instead. The Nohi bus from Takayama costs 2,800 JPY one way and takes about 50 minutes in the timetable example, and the fare rises to 2,900 JPY from 1 December 2026. Details are on our page about Takayama to Shirakawa-go, and the full overview is on how to get to Shirakawa-go.

Winter opening hours and what is closed

The open-air museum Minkaen runs shorter days in winter: 09:00 to 16:00 from December to February, with last entry 20 minutes before closing. From December to March it is closed on Thursdays. In bad weather it can close altogether. The old Yamashita house inside the museum has been closed to visitors since 20 March 2025 because of snow damage, so do not plan on it.

Houses in the village that you can enter have their own hours. The Wada house is open 09:00 to 17:00 with irregular rest days and takes cash only, and the Kanda house is open 10:00 to 16:00 and is closed on Wednesdays. Check the current times on the day, since closing days change. Free loan wheelchairs are not available in winter.

The walk to the viewpoint

The path up to the Shiroyama viewpoint can carry a risk of snow and avalanches in winter, and it may not be passable. Ask on arrival whether the route is open. More on the village walk and the lookout is on our things to do in Shirakawago page.
