Shirakawa Go at a glance
Shirakawa Go, usually written Shirakawa-go or Shirakawago, is a mountain village in Gifu Prefecture known for its steep thatched farmhouses. The part most visitors mean is Ogimachi, the largest of the gassho villages, where people still live and farm. Plan Shirakawa Go village as a walk through lanes, rice fields and water channels rather than a single sight, and look at Shirakawago Japan as a day trip you can build from Kanazawa, Takayama or Nagoya.
The village walk has no general entry fee. You pay extra only for the gassho houses you enter and for parking, which costs 2,000 yen for a car at the municipal lots since 1 October 2025. The village has no train station, so most visitors arrive by bus or by car.

A World Heritage site since 1995
Three villages, two prefectures.
The site is called Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama. UNESCO inscribed it in 1995 under criteria iv and v, and it covers three villages: Ogimachi, Ainokura and Suganuma. Ogimachi lies in Gifu. Ainokura and Suganuma belong to Gokayama in Toyama and are not part of the Ogimachi walk, so they need their own time. Our page on Gokayama explains how to see them, and the page on the history of the villages covers the silk and saltpeter trades behind the houses.
The protected landscape is more than the houses. Fields, forest, roads and water channels belong to it too, which is why the lanes of Ogimachi feel like a living village. If you want to know how the roofs are built and which houses you can enter, read about gassho-zukuri farmhouses.
Is Shirakawa-go worth visiting?
For most travellers the answer is yes, if you set realistic expectations. A walk through Ogimachi takes about 2 to 3 hours, which fits a day trip but also rewards an overnight stay. The village is small and popular, and people live in the houses you see, so the experience depends on how you behave as much as on the weather.
A few rules matter. Stay out of houses, gardens and fields that are not open to visitors, and do not look into windows or open doors. Do not smoke while walking, take your rubbish with you because the village has no general waste bins, and leave drones at home, since they are prohibited in the settlement area. Camping is not allowed in the World Heritage village. Cars are asked to stay out of the settlement between 09:00 and 16:00.
