Shirakawago hotels and where to stay
People who search for Shirakawago hotels usually find several kinds of lodging instead. The local tourism association lists gassho farmhouses, ryokan, general minshuku and guesthouses or hostels as separate categories. Not every place to stay in Shirakawa is a historic gassho house, and a booking "in Shirakawa" does not automatically mean a bed in the old village centre.
This page compares the options by type and by location, and it names no properties and no prices. Check meals, baths, arrival times and cancellation terms with the property itself, because they differ from one place to the next.

Accommodation in Shirakawago: the types
Four categories, kept apart in the official directory.
| Type | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Gassho house | A farmhouse with a steep thatched roof that takes guests; the listing shows what each house offers |
| Ryokan | Listed as its own category in the directory |
| Minshuku | Listed as the general minshuku category, separate from the gassho houses |
| Guesthouse or hostel | Listed as a separate category from the other three |
Staying in a gassho house, a ryokan or a minshuku in Shirakawago is not the same thing in every case. Some gassho houses are listed without meals, and some have limits of their own, such as taking one group at a time or not taking consecutive nights. That is a rule of the individual house, not of the village. Read the listing and ask before you book.
Choosing a village: Ogimachi and beyond
Ogimachi is listed as its own area in the directory. Other areas include Hatogaya and Hatotani, Hirase, Iijima and Maki. If you want to wake up inside the heritage area, filter the directory for Ogimachi.
Booking: when and how
The association runs an online accommodation search and says its quota is booked around 3 months ahead. That is the window for its own system, not a rule for every property. Other places may open earlier or later, so look at the page of the house you like.
Arrival matters too. The municipal car park at Seseragi runs from 08:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30, and an older notice says day visitors are not admitted at night, to protect residents. Overnight guests are handled separately, so ask your house how to arrive if you will be late.
Takayama or Kanazawa as a base
If the village is full or you want city options, sleep in Takayama or Kanazawa and travel by bus. Both have direct bus links to Shirakawa-go. In the timetable example the Takayama bus takes about 50 minutes, and the Kanazawa example of 75 minutes is the opposite direction, from Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa, so use it as a rough guide. The fare is 2,800 JPY one way from either city today and 2,900 JPY from 1 December 2026. Plan for the return trip as well, and check the last departure back.
Our pages Takayama to Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go give bus details and day trip options. For the full list of routes, see how to get to Shirakawa-go.
Light-up accommodation lottery
For the January 2027 light-up evenings the association allocated its rooms by lottery. Applications ran from 1 October 2026 at 13:00 to 31 October 2026 at 23:59 JST, with one application per person, and winners were due to be notified on 10 November 2026, according to the organiser's notice of 1 October 2026. The packages include the viewpoint ticket, and you arrange your own travel. Details of the event are on our Shirakawa-go light-up page.
