Takayama and Shirakawago: day trips and buses

Takayama is the most direct base for a day in Shirakawago. There is no railway station in the village, so every rail traveler changes to a bus, and from Takayama a Nohi bus reaches Ogimachi in about 50 minutes. That makes it easy to leave after breakfast, spend the middle of the day in the gassho village and be back in the evening. Takayama is treated here only as the starting point: this page covers the bus, the fares and the offers that start there, not the sights of the city.

You can go on your own with a bus ticket or join a guided day trip that sorts out the transport. Both options are below.

Bus from Takayama to Shirakawago

Fares, reservations and payment.

The timetable example for the Takayama route shows a departure at 7:50 and an arrival at 8:40, so about 50 minutes. An adult single costs 2,800 JPY today and 2,900 JPY from 1 December 2026. Children from 6 to 12 years pay half the adult fare, rounded to the next 10 JPY. Children under 6 usually ride free without their own seat; a seat of their own is charged at the child fare, and full buses can limit this.

Some trips on this route are marked R and need a reservation, while others cannot be reserved at all. Online bookings are paid in advance. The ticket counters of the bus company, including the one in Shirakawa-go, accept credit cards, though not every card brand may work. Cash is the safer backup, and the local village buses take no IC cards or cards at all.

Bus from Shirakawago to Takayama

For the way back, check the return departures in the same timetable before you decide how long to stay in the village. The village walk takes about 2 to 3 hours, and lockers at the bus terminal (small and medium 500 JPY, large 1,000 JPY per use, 8:00 to 17:00) help if you arrive with luggage. Autumn weekends and long weekends can bring traffic; the municipality warned of heavy traffic for 19 to 23 September 2026, for example, so allow extra time then.

Guided day trip, bus ticket or excursion bus

Three ways to do the same day.

Guided day trip

Round-trip transport from Takayama, a guide, entry to Takayama Jinya, a walking tour of Shirakawago and a 1.5-hour walking tour of Takayama. Lunch is not included, and some experiences depend on availability.

Bus tickets

Round-trip or one-way tickets, depending on the option, with luggage space, charging, a blanket, a toilet and all fees and taxes. Departures start in Takayama, Shirakawago or Nagoya. These tickets come without a guide, so you plan the village yourself with the things to do page.

Excursion bus

An air-conditioned scheduled excursion bus from Takayama that names Shirakawago and Ainokura in Gokayama in its title. It meets one minute on foot from the east exit of the JR station. Guide and entry fees are not listed, so budget for them separately. More on Ainokura is on the Gokayama page.

Takayama as a base

Why many travelers sleep in Takayama and visit the village by day.

Takayama and Kanazawa both have direct bus links to Shirakawa-go, which makes either city a workable base for a day trip. Count the full return journey in your plan, not only the single ride. If you are choosing where to sleep, read the where to stay page; if you come from the coast, compare the Kanazawa route and the Nagoya route.
