Shirakawago weather and the best time to visit
The best time to visit Shirakawago depends on what you want to see. Spring brings blossom, summer brings green fields, autumn brings red and yellow leaves, and winter brings snow on the thatched roofs. Each season has a different look, and each comes with its own trade-offs in temperature, rain and crowds.
All the figures on this page are long-term monthly averages from the Shirakawa weather station in Gifu, for the period 1991 to 2020. They describe a typical month, not the weather on the day you travel, and the timing of blossom and leaves changes from year to year.

Best time to visit Shirakawago by season
Spring
Cherry blossom usually comes around the second week of April, when the average high is 15.6 °C and the nights are still cool at 2.7 °C. Snow can linger in March, with an average peak depth of 125 cm, and 32 cm in April, so spring starts late here. Bring a warm layer.
Summer
Summer is warm and green. Highs reach 28.2 °C in July and 29.6 °C in August, and the evenings stay mild at 18.6 °C and 19.2 °C. July is among the wetter months, so pack a rain jacket. The village is easy to explore on foot at this time of year.
Autumn
Autumn leaves usually peak from late October to early November, when the average high is around 19.2 °C in October and 12.9 °C in November. The municipality issued a traffic warning for the long weekend of 19 to 23 September 2026, which shows that busy days can start earlier than the leaves. Start early on weekends.
Winter
The first snow in recent years came around the beginning of December, and the snow cover builds from late December to late February. Average peak depth reaches 148 cm in January and 173 cm in February. Winter tyres are required for driving. Everything about the cold season, from opening hours to the road, is on our Shirakawa-go winter page.
Rain, crowds and planning around them
July and September bring the most rain outside winter, so check the forecast the evening before and keep your plans flexible. Busy days are not predictable from the calendar alone: blossom weekends, the leaf season and long weekends all bring more visitors. A day tour or a bus from a nearby city is a calm way to deal with parking and traffic, and the choice of starting points is on our Shirakawa-go tours page.
For the evening illumination in January, see the Shirakawa-go light-up page. For routes and fares, see how to get to Shirakawa-go. These seasonal ranges are typical, not promises, and snow, blossom or leaf colour cannot be guaranteed for a specific date.
